At Tongwynlais we are firmly committed to a skills based curriculum. Pupils from the earliest stage are encouraged to develop skills and apply them across the curriculum. Learning is often organised in cross curriculum themes know as Learning Contexts. Recent themes in the Foundation Phase ( Nursery through to Year 2) have included 'The Sun has got his hat on!', 'Dinosaurs' and 'Heroes and Superheroes.' Whilst in Key Stage 2, topics have included 'Marching Back in Time' and 'Faraway Lands.'
The progress of each child is continuously assessed so that challenging targets can be set and Pupils from Year 2 set their own targets for learning in Writing. Learning Objectives for each learning session are shared with pupils and they are aware of the learning succes criteria for each learning task.
We are a school that takes problem solving and investigation very seriously building it in to our planning and also creativity. Recently awarded the Bronze Art Mark we offer our pupils the opportunity to learn a range of musical instruments including piano, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, cornet, trombone and horn. Pupils get the chance to regularly show off their talents!
